How the contest window is worked out

An operator has 30 days from receiving a proposed assessment to contest it. When MSHA has recorded receipt, the date shown is the day before MSHA's final order date. Before that, it is counted from the date MSHA printed the bill, which is never later than the real deadline. Check each deadline against the case file before relying on it.

About this record

These figures come from public Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) open government data on mines, inspections, violations and assessed violations. MineCitation copies them as published and does not add findings of its own.

A citation records a condition an MSHA inspector found. Operators can contest citations and penalties, and amounts can change after review. MineCitation is not legal advice.
